Puppies
Our Mission is to breed, raise and campaign some of the finest retrievers in the country.
We
have been Breeding, Raising, Training and Campaigning retrievers since 1997. We
believe that strength of pedigree and genetic health are the most important
factors in producing quality puppies. We strive for proven performers that
exhibit an abundance of natural ability. This approach enables us to offer
predictable high quality Labrador puppies that are
exceptionally skilled in the
field and easy to handle in your home.
Our goal is to take advantage of some of the finest Labrador bloodlines in North America so that we can offer our customers a truly wonderful hunting dog and family companion.
We work to achieve a balance of memory, intelligence, style, courage, perseverance and tractability: These are the attributes that define the essence of an exceptional Labrador Retriever. In addition, we aggressively strive to produce genetically sound, good looking Labrador puppies. All of our dogs are OFA certified and/or Penn Hipped, and their eyes CERF.
We typically have 2-3 working females that we use in our breeding program. Our bloodlines have been proven in field trial and hunt test competition. Our dogs are part of our family and live in our house. They are good natured family dogs with pleasing dispositions.
We believe that a puppy’s initial training provides the lifetime learning foundation for a fine retriever and companion. Because of this, we offer the Bird & Gun Puppy Headstart Program, as well as Intermediate and Advanced training programs.
Sam’s thoughts on choosing a puppy/breeder:
Selecting puppies can be a tricky business. If I knew how to
pick a winner every time I would be a wealthy person and it would be my full
time job. The best advice for choosing
a puppy is to go with (1)a reputable
breeder (defining “reputable” can sometimes be a challenge) with a (2) good
guarantee (define “good”). (3)The breeder should know something about training
and what a good dog should look like (in conformation and behavior) and they
should have (4)verifiable success with their breeding program. Repeat breedings
are a way that past successes can reasonably assure a breeder that quality
puppies will be again successful. However, repeat breedings can also mean that
the breeder is single minded and lazy and continues to breed the same dogs
together because it is convenient to do so.
The AKC says the most desirable behavioral charactistic of a Labrador Retriever is “Marking” ability. Most people do not really know what that means (it means that they have good eyes and are good at pinpointing the fall of a bird, as well as other things.)
Here are three things to consider: First, consider that
breedings with Field Trial and to some degree the Hunt Test bloodlines emphasize
Marking and Trainability. Retriever competitions are basically advanced
obedience tests with birds.
Secondly, Bench-bred (show) Labs are good at
winning beauty contests but may get lost on the end of a leash (seriously, I
have seen this). Third, the “hunting” type dogs are often seen as the best
middle ground. They often have enough Marking and hunting ability, decent
looks, and are sometimes more manageable around the house than straight Field
Trial bloodlines. However, hunting type dogs are often bred by the least
knowing and largest group of people; namely the average well intentioned guy
down the street that really knows very little about how a good dog should look
or behave.
So, those are some brief generalizations filled with my personal biases, no doubt!
